The proposed Keystone XL pipeline that would carry up to a million barrels a day of tar sands oil from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico is planned to pass through Nebraska. President Obama must deny or approve the pipeline by December. The proposal is opposed by diverse organizations, including environmental groups, faith based organizations, and local citizens in Nebraska. They are calling for the denial of the permit because of possible contamination of the Ogallala Aquifer including local ranch wells and drinking water if and when the pipeline leaks. The Columban Fathers have been active in lobbying the President and their members of Congress, as well as with opposition activities in Omaha, to deny the permit.
