Dear Representative (Enter your Representative’s Name here):

As a person of faith, I believe we have a responsibility to ensure that all God’s people have enough to eat and that we protect the integrity of life and all Creation. I urge you to ensure that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Safe Box programs are fully funded in the 2012 Farm Bill to ensure that the most vulnerable around the world are fed, including the undocumented and children in the United States.

Additionally, I urge you to reject any proposals promoting genetically engineered (GE) seeds in the 2012 House Agriculture Committee’s Farm Bill and the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2013. Current proposals will reduce judicial or FDA oversight, scientific review, or otherwise make it easier for GE seeds to end up in commerce.

As a person of faith, I strongly believe that we must protect the health of God’s people and Creation. Ensuring the safety of the food we eat is critical to ensuring our commitment to the Creator. GE seeds are engineered to be pest resistant by adding harmful pesticides into the seeds like 2,4D, the same chemical used in Agent Orange. Scientists have found evidence that 2,4D can cause birth defects, endocrine disruption, nervous system disorders, and cancer.

Genetically engineered seeds also destroy the very cycle of life, a core value of my faith. I support an agricultural system that promotes life and protects Creation. We can feed the hungry in the United States and the world, and guarantee the livelihoods of small farmers with techniques such as organic farming, conservation programs, and integrated pest management. Please fully fund SNAP, Safe Box, and conservation programs; and reject proposals to promote GE seeds in the upcoming Farm Bill reauthorization and the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2013.

Sincerely,
