|“Hunger is the most cruel and concrete sign of poverty… [We need] a network of economic institutions capable of guaranteeing regular access to sufficient food and water.”
-Pope Benedict XVI, U.N. World Summit on Food Security, 2009
Dear Columban Friend,
In 2011 terrible floods in Pakistan affected 26 million people and left many without food and a place to live. Columban missionaries in Pakistan, with the generous support of our donors and benefactors, helped facilitate food and shelter for many families.
One policy that allowed the United States to respond with emergency and longer term food aid in Pakistan was the 2008 Farm Bill. The Farm Bill provided funding for emergency food aid and for a new pilot program called the Local and Regional Procurement Program (LRP). The LRP ensures that food aid- emergency or otherwise- comes from communities in that country. In 2011, Pakistan received LRP funding to provide for the needs of flood victims and other hungry people.
In 2012 the Farm Bill expired and funding for this and other vital programs disappeared. The CCAO, along with Father Bill Morton, joined 800 people of faith in D.C. April 5-8 to learn about and advocate for a faithful Farm Bill that supports rural communities around the world, provides fresh and affordable food to hungry people, and protects God’s creation.
Easter is a season of renewal and hope. Give struggling communities within the U.S. and around the world a sense of hope by calling on Congress to renew a faithful Farm Bill. Pledge to send a letter based on sample text here.
Within the U.S., the Farm Bill supports important programs to create rural development, provide food stamps for millions to eat, grow organic food, and develop a new generation of farmers including women and people of color. These critical programs ensure that our brothers and sisters in rural communities and urban communities are able to sustain themselves through challenging economic times. Protect the common good. Pledge to send a letter to your elected officials in the U.S. Congress.
By ensuring a faithful Farm Bill, we can do as we are called in Hosea 10:12: “Sow for yourselves justice: reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, till (God) may come and rain righteousness upon you.”
