Xstrata, a Swiss mining company is planning to build one the largest copper and gold mines in the world. Despite their statements on social and environmental responsibility, Xstrata has a contract with the Aquino government to provide military, police, and paramilitary security at the mining site.
Indigenous communities oppose the mining operation because it will displace the community and destroy the local ecology in the Malalag Bay. In the last two years, more than 28 indigenous community members and anti-mining activists have been murdered and their deaths have gone unsolved. Already there are well-documented cases that military or paramilitary leaders are responsible.
