Help Ensure the Safety of Immigrants by saying NO to the “SAFE Act”

October 8, 2013

Ask your U.S. Representative to vote “no” on the Strengthen and Fortify Enforcement Act, or SAFE Act (H.R. 2778). If the law is passed, our immigrant brothers will live in fear of extreme law enforcement measures and prison sentences simply for being undocumented. In addition, it would prevent churches, non-profits, and individuals from providing assistance to undocumented immigrants.

Our faith calls us to stand in solidarity with all immigrants. The SAFE Act works against efforts for a humane immigration policy that helps bring millions out of the shadows on a path to citizenship and the opportunity to live a full life in the United States.

The SAFE Act, by contrast, will increase the number of immigrants in detention and bolster the wealth of the private prison industry that manages a number of the detention centers.

Alternatively, we invite you to consider supporting the “Protect Family Values on the Border Act” introduced by Representative Lucille Royball-Allard to protect victims of trafficking and ensure that arrangements can be made to keep families together or ensure that children are left in the care of a loved one.

Call the Capitol Switchboard today at 202-224-3121. Ask to speak to your Representative. Once you reach someone in your representative’s office, ask to speak to the staffer who works on immigration or leave a message. Let the office know that as a person of faith that you oppose the SAFE Act because it hinders the human dignity of our immigrant neighbors and the principles of our faith. Ask them to support the “Protect Family Values at the Border Act.”
