November 30 marked the beginning of Advent, which is truly a season of preparation. Liturgically, we are preparing for the birth of Christ. Politically, there is a lot of preparation happening in the world of climate change. Numerous countries are pledging monetary contributions and setting emissions reduction goals in anticipation of a global discussion about the environment.
From December 1 through December 12, Lima, Peru will host the 20th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP20) for the U.N. Climate Change Conference. The COP meetings are gatherings of world leaders working to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The discussions at COP20 are intended to set a framework for solidifying a binding international agreement about greenhouse gas emissions at the COP21 meeting in Paris in 2015.
To accompany these important meetings, the CCAO is participating in a Week of Action, during which we will learn about and pray for different environmental concerns as well as the world leaders in Lima. We created a resource entitled “Praying for Creation” to guide our spiritual reflection. We invite you to share this resource with your parish or community to facilitate a conversation about climate change.
