I went through a lot of ideas before ending up as a missionary. Due to the fact that my uncle was a local pastor, I thought about diocesan (clergy), but I was not interested.

Later on I thought about becoming an engineer and build bridges, and then switched to being a pilot. I finished high school early, but you couldn’t get into Irish Air Corps until you were 18. So I got a job in civil service. But on the day of the physical, I failed because of my left eye, I could read the chart from top to bottom with my right eye, but then we switched and I was lost.
I had thought about being a missionary, you know, but now it seemed to me that God was into this. I said, “If I can’t beat God, I’ll join him,” and I signed up for the Columbans.
