Maria – Turning disappointment into motivation

I am an intern at the Columban Center for Advocacy and Outreach investigating the Start Treaty which calls for a reduction in U.S. and Russian nuclear weapons and increased verification systems.

I have had the opportunity with CCAO staff to meet with two Senate staffers to present Columban views on the treaty.  Though our meeting did not result in a clear commitment to a position by the Senators we visited I channeled my disappointment into something productive. With the support of my supervisors and peers I have felt even more motivated to continue the fight for enhancing human security and nuclear non-proliferation. The opportunity to advocate for what we believe is right is the true beauty of democracy.

This experience and work has helped me see how I can put my Catholic faith into action. It is our responsibility to not allow fear to consume us but to be guided by our faith. The CCAO has allowed me to take on that responsibility and do meaningful work that I am proud of.
