Dream Act

| December 3, 2010 Print

UPDATE: We send THANKS to everyone who made calls to the House and the Senate on the DREAM act over the last few days! Due to your calls and the work of many who care about the lives of young immigrants, DREAM passed in the House last night.

Today (Thursday), the Senate voted to table the act so that they can vote on the version passed in the House. The vote should take place some time next week. This gives us more time to advocate for the bill! If you haven’t called your Senators yet, do it now. If you have called, call them again early next week.

CALL your Members of Congress  TODAY to support the DREAM Act

BACKGROUND

The DREAM Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act of 2009, S. 729) creates a path to citizenship for undocumented students who have entered the United States before age 16.

Despite receiving their diplomas, over 65,000 undocumented high school graduates find themselves being denied higher education each year due to the inability to become citizens. As you can imagine, this discourages many and denies us the benefit of their talents and abilities in the work force.

We recognize the suffering of these young people who, through no fault of their own, are denied access to legal status and an opportunity to continue their education.  Pope Benedict XVI asks for immigration policy “with a view to safeguarding the needs and rights of individual migrants and their families.” The DREAM act honors the needs and rights of young people brought to this country that they now consider home.

The DREAM Act could come to the House floor TODAY, December 3 and to the Senate floor early next week. The time to act is NOW.
