Migrant rights and immigration policies are currently of concern for Columbans in Omaha, Nebraska, as the issue has been a controversial topic for local politics. In the summer of 2010, an ordinance passed in Fremont, NE that prohibits businesses and landlords from hiring or renting to illegal immigrants. In response to this, the Columbans, along with others, have organized efforts to positively influence state legislation and to educate about immigrants and their current situation. They work with a view of reforming federal legislation and preventing future Fremont-type resolutions. Many parishes and faith communities join with lawyers to organize informational meetings to inform immigrants of their rights. In Omaha, Columbans are answering the call to welcome the stranger in their collaborative efforts to welcome migrants to Nebraska’s good life.
