Sometimes I feel so sorry for myself,
so full of self-pity,
thinking no-one understands how I feel,
or what I’m going through.
Then I see the conditions of the poor
in the Third World,
see them smile when they have nothing,
not even rain,
see them struggle each day.
In spite of illness and pain,
I am deeply ashamed at myself.
Lord I am so sorry.
Please forgive my selfish ways,
for being concerned only for myself.
Help me to think of others
who have their crosses too,
especially the innocent poor
who suffer poverty, disease and death.
Open my heart to the sufferings
and sorrows of others,
then maybe I won’t feel so sorry for myself.
Amen.
