There is something extraordinary about the light of Christmas. As winter darkness settles around us, homes and communities shine with candles, Christmas lights, and decorations. These lights are beautiful reminders of an even greater light—the light of Christ.
St. John tells us, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5) At Christmas, we celebrate the coming of that light into the world.
Jesus was born into a world that was far from perfect. There was poverty, political uncertainty, hardship, and fear, just like today. Yet God chose that very world as the place where His Son would be born. This is an important reminder for us today. We do not need perfect circumstances to experience Christmas joy.
Joy does not mean that every problem disappears. Instead, Christian joy comes from the knowledge that God is present with us in every circumstance.
The birth of Christ assures us that darkness will never have the final word. When we are discouraged, Christ offers hope. When we feel alone, Christ reminds us that we are loved. When we are uncertain about the future, Christ invites us to trust in God's providence.
This joy is meant to be shared. Christmas gives us an opportunity to become light for others. We can visit someone who is lonely. We can offer encouragement to a person who is struggling. We can forgive an old hurt. We can aid a family in need. We can simply take time to listen to someone who needs to know that they are not forgotten.
Every act of love allows Christ's light to shine a little more brightly in our world.
As we admire the lights of Christmas, let us remember the true Light who came into the world for all people. Let us allow His joy to illuminate our hearts and guide our actions.
May our homes be filled with laughter, our families with peace, and our hearts with gratitude. Most of all, may we welcome Christ anew and carry His light into the year ahead.
The world needs Christmas joy—not merely the joy of celebration, but the lasting joy that comes from God's love.
