St. Francis (1181–1226) lived the Gospel so authentically that he became a living image of Christ. Renouncing wealth, he embraced poverty, joy, and fraternity with all creation.
Francis saw every creature as a brother or sister, praising God for the sun, moon, and earth. His mission was peace — healing division and calling all to repentance through joy. “Preach the Gospel at all times; when necessary, use words,” he famously said.
October, the month of harvest, invites us to gratitude for creation and simplicity of life. Francis teaches that mission begins in joy — the joy of knowing we are loved by God and called to love every living thing.
