Born in Peru in 1579, the son of a freed slave and a Spanish nobleman, St. Martin de Porres faced prejudice all his life. Yet he responded with humility and service.

A Dominican lay brother, Martin cared for the sick, fed the hungry, and tended to animals — seeing God’s image in all creation. Miracles surrounded him, but his true greatness lay in his compassion. He lived the mission of mercy, bringing healing where others saw division.

In November, as we remember the communion of saints, Martin reminds us that holiness is within reach for all who serve with humility. His mission shows that the smallest act of kindness can be a doorway to heaven.
