In the darkness of Auschwitz, St. Maximilian Kolbe (1894–1941) shone with Christ’s light. A Franciscan priest devoted to Mary, he offered his life in place of another prisoner condemned to die.
Kolbe’s mission was rooted in total self-giving. His sacrifice was not a single heroic act, but the fruit of a lifetime lived for others. He taught that love conquers hatred, even in the face of death. His calm joy during horror proclaimed the triumph of the Gospel.
In August, as we meditate on perseverance and faith under fire, Kolbe reminds us that mission is love made visible — love that gives itself completely, no matter the cost.
