Trust in the Love of God

An engraved illustration of Hebrews worshipping a golden calf.

By Fr. Tom Rouse

This is quite a conversation between Moses and God as we read in Exodus 32:7-14. God is upset because “your people” have made a calf of molten metal and are worshipping it as a god who brought them out of Egypt. God now wants to destroy them and yet still make Moses into a great nation.

The title page of Exodus from the bibleI’m having some trouble with this God; I don’t think he knows how to identify who the people of Moses are! What’s more, God threatens to utterly destroy the people who have made the idol. So, Moses has to reason with God! “You want to destroy your people – he is putting them back into God’s hands – and in doing so you will lose all credibility because the Egyptians will say, ‘He set them free only to annihilate them!’”

Then Moses tells God to calm down and to remember how he swore to the ancestors of these people that he will make them into a great nation. This brings us to Jesus’ conversation with the Jews in John 5:31-47. Jesus tells His people, “John spoke on my behalf and you didn’t believe him. Still, you claim to know the scriptures that testify to me just as John did.” T

The key is love of God. Jesus says, “I am not going to accuse you but Moses will.” Trust in your own prophets; trust in those who speak honestly and directly with God; it is their trust that you need to rely on. They will speak on your behalf when it comes to facing God. They are the ones who can ease God’s concerns and assure us of a second, third and many other chances. This is quite a conversation. You can involve God and Jesus and Moses and others who will speak on your behalf. But remember that, in the end, it is the love of God for people and indeed for all of creation, which is the key.
