Growing up in a Midwestern middle-class family, I was unaware of the economic realities outside of my world. Obviously, my parents worked hard to put a meal on the table and earn a living. My father taught me the value of saving up for a rainy day, and as I got older, explained to me about retirement funds such as the 401k.
